Once Upon a Time I Attended a Concert at NOVA

The Alexandria Virginia Band and NOVA Community Chorus

Schlesinger Center, NOVA Shortly before Christmas 2004, we we joined old friends Margaret and Allen at their home in Arlington for dinner.

They went out of their way in preparing something they were pretty sure Brian would like: meatloaf and mashed potatoes.

After dinner the four of us went to a concert in the Rachel M. Schlesinger Concert Hall and Arts Center at the Northern Virginia Community College.

Local bands and choruses are fun. It really isn't fair to compare the NOVA chorus to the Washington Choral Arts Society or the Alexandria Band to the NSO.

Still, we have been frequent attendees at the Kennedy Center and as the saying has it, "once you've been to the mountain top..."

It is interesting that we had very different reactions. Alan thought the band's bass section were too heavy.

I especially liked "Finlandia."

Brian thought the band should have stayed with marches and popular Christmas music and avoided classical pieces such as "Finlandia."

Margaret was, as always, diplomatically positive about everything.

It is a good evening.
